Habits are not bad, the bad thing is to get caught up in the web of habits and stay there. If this happens, you run the risk of numbing yourself, not only emotionally but intellectually as well. You may also become anxious and learn to ignore the array of opportunities you have to grow and change.

The web of habits is a trap. This means that habits have very subtle threads that initially support you, but then trap you and limit your movement.

Of course, over time you’ve learned to balance the damage these habits have done to you with the benefits they’ve brought you. And so you stay in this mode indefinitely.

The human brain is a fantastic organ designed primarily to create. In essence, creation is the path that intelligence uses to solve problems. Mental abilities and the emotional world are at their peak when there are difficulties.

Habits are one way of defining our degree of experience. One of the main functions of routine is to reduce the range of everyday problems we face. It prevents us from thinking and feeling good and we are driven by inaction.

It’s good that we don’t have to think about everything we do. However, when you get to the point where you’ve already decided everything in advance, you get bored first and then you fall into depression.

As we said above, our brains are made for solving problems and novelties. Avoiding them thus leads to intellectual and emotional consequences. So how do you know if you’re a slave to your own habits? Keep the following in mind.

You spend more time on what is urgent than on what is important

The word “urgent” implies duty. Habits often lead us to fulfill our lives with duties, but they are almost always about meeting the needs of others, not our own. Duty compels us to act and there are many types: work, academic, family-related, emotional, ideological, and so on.

The important thing here is to find out what really determines your well-being and the satisfaction of your life. For example, spending quality time with those we love. Or thinking about something that annoys you and trying to figure out why, because you rarely make time for this.

If you are caught in a web of habits, you may experience discomfort. You can get annoyed by routine, even if it allows you to plan and organize everything well.

Nevertheless, make sure to silence that voice that says something is wrong. Often you tell yourself that “it is what it is” and so you have to accept it and deal with it. You alone are fueling that conformism and, most likely, ideas and assumptions (like “it’s the mature way to do it” ) that aren’t always as reasonable as they seem.

The Web of Habits and Your Fear of Taking Risks

One of the most harmful side effects of habits is that they gradually scare you. You end up being afraid of anything that is unknown or which involves some kind of challenge, change or novelty without even noticing it.

It all becomes automatic. Every time you are faced with a new situation, your alarm will go off as if there is a threat. You approach change not with enthusiasm and curiosity, but with alertness and fear. You lose your openness to new experiences.

Postpone indefinitely because you can’t get out of your web of habits

There are times when you long for something different, even if you’re stuck in your web of habits. You might think you might get further or feel more alive if you did this or that. If you only dared to change or undertake a new activity.

The problem, however, is that you almost always put your dreams and projects aside. You always wait for more favorable circumstances or for an opportunity to present itself, or for certain better circumstances to present itself, and so on. But most likely those dreams and desires will eventually be set aside forever.

Boredom is one of the clearest signs that you are trapped in a web of habits. It manifests as a feeling of disinterest in everything. In addition, nothing stimulates you enough and you are not passionate about anything.

You are no longer lively and your flat emotions predominate. So, without being fully aware of it, you start living as if it were just a pastime. You end up assuming that state as if it were normal and logical, when it isn’t.

Habit is a very strong force. It’s not even a negative in itself, as it contributes to your overall stability. But it becomes a web that catches and suffocates you as it takes over your life.

Don’t give in. Start by making small changes, such as taking a different route or eating something different. They’re great ways to break free from that web of habits.
