Many people want to increase their self-control. The problem is, many of them don’t have enough willpower to do this. Motivation isn’t always enough if you don’t work in the right way. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to achieve this goal.

Self-control is actually the ability to control your emotions and stay calm in stressful, hostile or highly emotional moments. Some people describe it as “keeping a cool head,” but it’s more like having a calm heart.

You should gradually improve your self-control. You can’t go from impulsiveness to calm overnight. It is a whole process that you have to go through step by step. A big part of it is learning to turn on your internal alarm. Let’s take a closer look at what that means.

Worrying is a big obstacle

The things that stress you, frustrate you, and make you anxious are usually not as stressful, frustrating, or intense as they may seem. We are often our own worst enemies and make our problems bigger than they really are.

If you can’t process your emotions and feel like you’re drowning, it means you’re seeing the world through the lens of fear. That is exactly what worrying is: a fearful way of looking at the world. Stressful thoughts about all the things that could happen to you, however, don’t help you.

So the first internal alarm to set is the one that tells you that you are worrying. So what can you do if it goes off? Then there are the following things you can do:

  • Express your concern. Write it down or record it with a voice recorder. The main thing is not to keep it in.
  • Set a time limit for worrying. Giving yourself a certain amount of time to think about the things you worry about can be very helpful.
  • Take advantage of that time. Use the time we mentioned above to try and find solutions. While you won’t find magical quick fixes, you may be able to figure out what your next step should be.
  • Relax the rest of the time. Outside of the time you need to worry, relax and try not to think about negative things.

The process to boost your self-control

If you want to increase your self-control, you also need to learn how to respond quickly to the emotions you struggle with. You have to isolate the feeling, which means you don’t react to it out of reflex. From there you can push the feeling away.

To do that, you need to be able to identify what’s bothering you. Then write it down and push it away. From there you can try to achieve mental peace. Be patient and you will see that your emotions are in balance with time.

That’s how you do it!

If you strengthen your self-control, you will no longer feel the need to react impulsively and even be able to anticipate negative emotions.

Here are some steps to help you.

  • Learn to resist overreactions. In other words, learn to stay calm and not do anything you’ll regret later.
  • Identify the emotion that threatens to take over (e.g. fear, anger, stress) and keep it under control.
  • Take control of situations that stress, anger, or frustrate you and get on with your life.
  • Practice relaxation techniques and use them in difficult moments. This will make it easier for you to find your peace and calm.
  • Maintain your composure and respond in a constructive manner. This means finding solutions to negative emotions.
  • Achieve a high level of self-control so that you are even able to calm other people down.
  • Anticipate situations that may cause tension and find ways to avoid them or keep them from getting out of hand.

Ultimately, it’s important to use your internal alarm to help you control negative thoughts and emotions. You can do this through willpower, constant practice, self-awareness and not putting yourself under pressure.
